The Beethoven Frieze - Gustav Klimt

Gustav Klimt and his friends from 1898 to 1905 in the Sezession Building exhibit their work of the "Palace of Sezession". 1902 becomes an important year for the group. They decide to turn their fourteenth exhibition into a special art event, into a holistic experience of art. The most ambitious designs, the "Beethoven exhibition", are organized. Contarelli Chapel - Caravaggio

Caravaggio undertook the decoration of the Contarelli Chapel of the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi. She paints "The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew" and "The Calling of St Matthew" for the decoration of the Contarelli Chapel. Two years later, the altar board is ordered to replace Cobaert's statue for the Contarelli Chapel. The third order Caravaggio received is "Saint Matthew and the Angel".

The Two Fridas - Frida Kahlo

One of Frida Kahlo's most famous paintings, "The Two Fridas", was made in 1939, when Diego Rivera and Frida ended their eleven-year marriage.

 

In the table there are two Frida sitting side by side on a bench and facing the viewer. One is the unloved Frida, who is divorced from Diego, and the other one is Diego's lover Frida.

Medusa's Story - Caravaggio

Medusa was one of three sisters in Greek mythology known as the Gorgos. Her difference between her two sisters, Sthenno and Euryale, was that she was mortal. The main characteristic of these creatures, whose hair was woven with snakes, with wild pig teeth, bronze hands and golden wings, was to release fear. They were turning the one they looked into stone.

Copy Works - Vincent van Gogh

Copies of the works of famous painters by Vincent van Gogh between 1887 and 1890 constitute an important place in his art. Using the black-and-white lithography, reproductions and wooden prints of his brother Theo sent to him from Paris, transformed the paintings of painters such as Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669), Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863) and Jean-François Millet (1814-1875) into colorful paintings.

Van Gogh explains the purpose of the copies in his letters to his brother Theo:

“I can assure you that it interests me enormously to make copies, and that not having any models for the moment it will ensure, however, that I don’t lose sight of the figure.”

Sunflowers - Vincent van Gogh
