Apocalypse - Albrecht Dürer
Renowned painter Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) gave his most famous works in the field of engraving and was recognized thanks to engraving. His wood-engraved engravings, in which he added a monogram to protect the copyright, also provided Dürer with a regular source of income.
Dürer won his first major success in the field of engravings in 1498 by engraving "Apocalypse" (Apocalipsis cum figuris). This work was about the end of the world, "Apocalypse", in the Book of St. John Revelation in the New Testament.
This wood print series was Dürer's most iconographic descriptions. The fourth work of the series, "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse", had a great impact on those who believed that the end of the world would come at the end of the 15th century. Four horsemen accompanied by angels galloped from the left were Death, Hunger, Plague and War.
In 1511, Albrecht Dürer published the wooden print series "The Large Passion“ and "The Life of the Virgin” together with the new version of the ”Apocalypse".
